When KahWen and Ryan announced they were leaving their tech careers in Germany to return to New Zealand and open a gelato shop, we were thrilled—both for them and, admittedly, for ourselves (the unofficial clause of friendship: free gelato for life). But when they revealed the name, we paused. “Bear Gelato?” It took a moment, but once we heard their story, everything clicked.

The Berlin Bear is woven into the fabric of Berlin’s identity. For KahWen and Ryan, it represented more than just a city—it symbolised the place where they fell in love with exceptional gelato and discovered their calling. “Bear Gelato” became their way of honouring that journey while bringing something truly special back home to Auckland.
